The Foundation for Studies and Professionalization Maya -FEPMaya- is a non-profit social projection entity. Its main objective is the professionalization of young Mayans with limited economic resources, mainly women, from rural areas and minority Mayan linguistic communities in the country. It also aims to rescue, promote and strengthen art, science, Mayan technology, etc .; through research and publications of high scientific quality.
The Foundation for Maya Studies and Professionalization - FEPMaya - started its actions in 1987, in 1992 it functioned as a Mayan scholarship program and it was until 2003 when it was legally constituted as a foundation by means of ministerial agreement number 1882-2003.
It is an initiative of Mayan professionals whose main objective was the specialization of indigenous university graduates at the graduate level both inside and outside the country. Given the small number of indigenous graduates in the country, FEPMaya reoriented its actions in the training and graduation of Mayan professionals in the country's universities. This reorientation allowed a group of Mayan students from Quetzaltenango to be awarded to obtain a university degree in medicine.
As of 2014, 99 students have graduated: 42 women (42%) and 57 men (58%), in 27 specialties in both social sciences and exact sciences.

The total number of graduates come from 15 language communities. Most graduates come from the K’iche’ language community (33 = 34%) and Kaqchikel (20 = 22%) and 46 (46%) come from other language communities. These professionals graduated from five universities in the country, being the Universidad de San Carlos where the majority (67%) and Universidad Rafael Landívar (25%) have graduated.
The experience accumulated over the years and the new vision of the Foundation, allows and demands the search for new strategies and fields of action. In this virtue, the FEPMaya will soon be opening a space dedicated to research and study, based on the social, political, economic and cultural needs that concern indigenous peoples. Both the training of qualified human resources and their gradual involvement in the research processes are intertwined and oriented towards strengthening and institutional sustainability of the organization.
